Vision Resources

The Library offers the following low-vision assistive devices:

  • A large Merlin desktop digital video magnifier and enhancer with many features that make it ideal for reading books, newspapers and fine print on all types of materials.

  • A hand-held Optelec digital magnifier capable of enlarging images up to 10x on its 4-inch screen. This lightweight portable device is available for use anywhere in the Library-- it is especially useful for browsing the shelves.

  • A computer station outfitted with a 22-inch monitor, a large print keyboard, and screen magnification software that provides special options for patrons with low-vision for Internet and email access, library catalog and database searching and word processing.

The Library also facilitates access to the Talking Book and Braille Library Program, a service provided by the New York State Library which provides audio-cassettes and players and books in Braille. The service is available for eligible New York State residents of any age who have a physical disability that prevents them from reading print materials. Applications and additional information is available at the Adult Reference Desk.

In addition the Library has both large print and audiobook editions of many fiction and nonfiction titles.

Our librarians can acquaint you with the equipment and provide any assistance you may need in finding materials.
